I’m Maria Miller, an artist who is obsessed with nature and the color blue. Thanks for being curious about my story.
While painting brings me so much joy, what drives me as an artist is doing my best to capture the beauty and emotion of places in nature that make me feel something.
Everything I paint begins with a feeling that I’m looking to transfer onto the canvas.
These feelings are shaped by the places I visit, what's happening in my life when I pick up a brush, and by the colors and light present in a scene. What I paint is intended to be a window into another place and feeling. I paint to transport you - whether it be to a place on the globe or somewhere deep within your own heart.
These feelings are what give my work meaning. They create a connection between me and what I’m painting and between the finished piece and you.
I grew up in Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania among the forests, fields, creeks and lakes that make the north eastern U.S. so beautiful. When I was little I hatched a plan to become an orthodontist so I could make enough money to retire early and build an art studio at my house to be able to do what I really dreamed of doing - painting.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned a thing or two about chasing dreams and one thing I've learned is we don't have to wait until someday when things are all perfect to do what we dream of doing. In 2017 I moved to San Francisco to chase two dreams - marrying my now husband and a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology. I am a hopeless romantic through and through.
In 2021 we moved into our first house in southern California and this new space and the beauty of the San Diego coastline is what inspired me to begin painting again and I've been at it ever since.
I may not have a fancy studio, but that doesn't bother me. For now, painting on my kitchen island under the skylight is my favorite place to be. I'm mesmerized by nature's beauty and so fortunate that I get to explore the mountains, coast, rivers and deserts that make living on the west coast so appealing. Sometimes I pack up my watercolors, gouache or acrylics and paint on location, other times I work off of reference photos I've snapped with my phone or photographs captured by my talented husband, Derek. I live in Oceanside, CA, an awesome little beach town in SoCal that offers plenty of inspiration and amazing sunsets.
