I'll never forget how I felt during my first visit to the desert. I was in San Pedro de Atacama in Chile (that's where I encountered Laguna Tuyajto) and it was so confronting and harsh and dynamic and colorful and breathtakingly beautiful. Before then I didn't know that all of those properties could co-exist in one place. There were colors and textures I'd never seen in nature before and I was captivated. The desert's vastness kept me from being able to hide from myself - the space that was usually filled with water and plants and trees that I could loose myself in just weren't there and in that space there was room for me to meet myself.
While the intensity of the desert is too much for me to reside in, I'm fortuante to be able to visit a desert at least once a year and my visits never cease to inspire me to paint and reveal more of myself to me. Expect more pieces to be added to this part of the gallery with each desert pilgrimage I make.
